Our client is the industry leader in the manufacture of electrical wires and cables (electrical conductors).

Main functions

Objective

Design and production of a horizontal traction machine for pulling cables to the point of tearing, measuring the force/deformation curve according to configurable cycles and complying with current test standards.

Problematic issues

The electrical cable traction machine performs tests on cables up to 20 m long, with a programmable horizontal traction force of up to 800 kN. The automatic control system, a Human Machine Interface (HMI), provides intuitive control of the test bench, enabling adjustment of the tensile cycles and tensile forces, as well as format changes for the products to be tested.

Solution and result

The design office engineers developed the test bench using a concept of identical modules assembled end-to-end, ensuring perfect rigidity of the bench as well as ease of assembly and shipment of the test machine to our customer. This concept also allows the length of the bench to be resized by adding or removing modules.

Traction is provided by a hydraulic servo jack up to 800kN, with position, speed and force control. The cable under test is fixed between the traction cylinder and a lockable mobile carriage. This trolley can be adapted to the actual length of the cable being tested.

The test bench incorporates specific, interchangeable clamping jaws for rapid replacement of the cables to be tested.

Each module is fitted with polycarbonate covers to ensure the safety of operators in the event of breakage of the samples being tested.

The mechanical test bench proposed is the perfect answer to the problems posed. The software developed by our Labview programmers allows you to

  • set up test routines,
  • view measurement curves
  • edit and consult sensor measurement calibrations
  • edit automatic test reports.
